Twenty Twenty and Carol

Hey mate,

Carol and I have been married 8 years now, and people ask us…

“How do you keep falling in love?”

This post is about the oldest story known to man, “boy meets girl”.

So boy meets girl . They share.  They talk. They ask questions.  Hopefully they both smile and giggle.

Here’s where it gets good.

Most girls decide what their future will be with the boy, based upon the stories he tells about his past.

We call that, “future based on past”.  It’s a pretty shallow and not very effective strategy.  Think iPod.  The iPod transformed the music industry, because PAST doesn’t dictate future.

Future based on past.  That can be fun, but here is something that seems to be a bit deeper and more fun you can try, if you want to fall in love everyday with someone special.

We call it a future based on discovery.   “The mystery.”

If both the boy and the girl stop defining themselves based on their “history”, something cool shows up.

They both get to discover who they can become, with each other.

Carol and I did this when we got together. We decided to play, not date. We decided to share, not manipulate. We decided to discover “who and what” we could become as a couple, not use our history as a reason to like each other.

We have had some high intensity moments, but they are rare, and they are never used to define one another.

We have had some challenges, but we always seek to find not just the positive side, but also the “miracle of us” involved in it. (That might not make sense to read, but it sure is cool to experience.)

We get to fall in love, with ourselves, with each other, with all that truly is each day. Because we “forget history”, and “discover mystery” very very often.

How could you do that today?

How could you be more “love” and less “thinking”?

How else could you do that?
