Who Gave You The Authority?

Hey mate,

Sometimes people want to know….

“Who gave you the authority?”

Sometimes, when they see you happy, successful, having heaps more ease in life – sometimes what they really want to know is “where’s it all coming from”.

  • As a black belt, I have rank certificates. They can show you what particular instructors think of my skill levels, up to 5th degree black belt which is pretty good.

(The certificates are nice, I’m glad I have them – but they aren’t what makes me a martial artist or an effective teacher.)

  • As a NLP guy, I have certificates well. And as a hypnotist. And as a reflexologist, energy healer, Reiki teacher etc.

(But they really don’t mean much of anything, do they.)

Because maybe you’ve noticed – some people “have it” and some people don’t.

(And it doesn’t really matter who signed what – what matters is results.)

“Authority doesn’t come from another. Authority doesn’t come from defining what is “the right way” or deciding “what the facts are”.  Authority, in your life – the life you are here to live right now – is you discovering what is possible for you.” – Mr Twenty Twenty

You discover what is possible for you by ignoring “the current facts” and exploring what it is you choose to become.

If all the acorns in the world focused on the facts, we wouldn’t have any forests would we….

So instead of focusing on the facts, imagine what ELSE is possible for you.

Take some action, not to FORCE anything to change, but to discover what happens when you do.

Experiment. Not just with what you do and what you haven’t done yet, but with what you THINK every day.

Step outside of your complacent zone.

Consider “reality” might be VERY different than the thoughts you repeat every day.

Lather, rinse, repeat.   And remember YOU are the operant power.  You are the authority in your life.  Give yourself permission to grow, to succeed, to take chances, to discover who you can be – today.    And take the time to really realize – REALITY  (that’s you) might be VERY DIFFERENT that what you thought.

That’s where the fun begins.

Many blessings,

Mr Twenty Twenty

  1. Well, you’ve said it buddy. Authority isn’t in the position, the certification or in the false bravado. It’s not outside ourselves. We are the authority of ourselves and no one can take that away from us.

When I teach golf I tell my students not to trust me, but to trust themselves. I make them do things that might or might not work in the moment, if it does they keep it, if it doesn’t they do not.

Authority comes from knowing, not necessarily from trusting others. I know, therefore I guide.

My students either get it or they do not get it. It’s not something they have to work one, it’s something they explore and get or not get. It’s that simple.

Once they get it, they have the authority, if they so choose to pass this on to someone else.

I am not certified in golf but would challenge any golf instructor in the world to get anyone better at it, because I know something they do not know or understand. They are working from the outside in, they pretend to be the authority over another, while I work from the inside out, I guide my students into self knowledge.

Learning to apply this understanding to all areas of my life. Golf is the metaphor for me. It’s taught me much, but nothing more exposed than “we” are the authority or ourselves.

The minute you give someone else your power by allowing them to teach rather than guide you’ve given your power away.

Everything is already in us. There is nothing to learn, only to remember.

    I’ve said too much.

    1. Tom,

      Your a guide dog.

So am I, but it’s hard marketing being a guide dog. People are afraid that you’ll bite them, or maybe wee on their leg.

I’m sure you never nibble off more than you can chew, and just the right amount that they do give a giggle – and then the unlearnings begin. And the space to discover how to be a better golfer grows.

      Good on you my friend,

      Big love,

      TT
