What do to if a dead Nun is stuck in your head

There has been a dead Nun stuck in my head.   She’s obese, menopausal, and has a yeast infection.

I met her when I was a little boy, first grade, Catholic school.   She scared the snot out of us kids, sometimes.  Other times she made us question reality, big time.  And today, this dead, obese, menapausal, yeast infected Nun STILL can run my life, because that’s how goofy life is – and how goofy your mind can be.

So what can you do if a dead Nun or worse is stuck inside your head?   (How can you get her out, once and for all.)

I’m a “mind science” kind of guy.  No, I am not a pshrink, and for the most part I’m not a very motivational speaker.  What I am is someone who has dedicated most of his adult life to cleaning up the mess left behind – by dead Nuns, racist radicals and other not so nice guys I have met along the way.

Sister Mary Whatshername, would threaten the class with “the paddle”.   “Don’t let me catch you….”, she would scream at the class.   So guess what, she didn’t.   Not that often anyway.  The bad kids, got sneaky.  The good kids, we got worried – about what we might have done, could have done, ANY mistake we made – and we prayed – we prayed a lot.

How crazy is that, praying to God – that the Nun won’t beat you.   Anyhooo….

I noticed in the past year, how much of my life has been CRAZY, when it comes to religion, authority, getting caught after making an honest mistake, and my reaction to obese, menopausal women.   It wasn’t much, but it was TOO MUCH.   Because it doesn’t matter if it’s a little turd in your coffee, a turd is a turd – and it takes away from the enjoyment of the coffee.

Coffee = mind.  Turd = turd.

So here is what I have been doing, and it works quite nice for me – an exCatholic in recovery.   I went back in time, and took a few minutes each day to REVISE the “conversation” that the dead Nun would have with us kids.  Instead of it being “hell fire and brimstone”, I started making it have the following 3 qualities.

  • Everyone makes mistakes.   The good news is, you can do better next time.
  • Life is meant to be lived – because it is a precious gift from God.
  • The kingdom of God is within you.  God is love.  So are you.

I know, the “original conversations” with Sister Mary Whatshername were real, and my REVISED ones are in my imagination only, but heck, think about this.  I am a 46 year old man, living as far away from the grave of Sister Mary Whatshername as is humanly possible (I grew up in Pennsylvania, I now am a resident of of Australia), and it HAS BEEN nothing more than IMAGINARY conversations with her – that have been driving me somewhat NUTS for almost 40 years now.

The memory of Sister Mary Whatshername needs a break.    And the poor lady gets to get a little compassion.  Because no matter bad the hell she put us kids through – even as adults who UNCONSCIOUSLY kept running those tapes – she must have been living in a much worse hell – to inflict that on a child.

Same thing happened years ago, when I cured myself of PTSD – I developed a deep sense of, “those buggers who hurt me, must have been really messed up inside – to be willing to beat me like that.”    Bless them.

So here’s the deal, when you have some kind of CRAPPY conversation inside your head, take the time to REVISE it, into something TOTALLY NEW that empowers you now.   It doesn’t matter if it’s imaginary or not, because your MEMORIES are imaginary.  The difference is that sometimes memories make you feel like crap and prevent you from living up to your potential.    And imaginary REVISED conversations will help you live with more integrity, personal power, and also help you exercise your CREATIVE MUSCLES.

Apply wildly and have a great day!

  1. Mahatma is my soul, truth means Mahathma, Mahathma Means truth. Indian youth should be focused to his life , his views . His thought is moral to us

  2. What you say is entirely true. However, I have found that people don't react well when they tell me a story of someone who assaulted them and my immediate response is, "Damn, I feel sorry for that guy. He must be in a terrible terrible state."

    True story, this actually happened……

And I wonder if people stopped feeling so much indignance and anger and just stepped back, how obvious that would usually be….

    Very healing thoughts.

And…. Good point you make! why not have positive conversations/lectures instead of negative ones IF they're imaginary anyways. I LOLed

    1. Fabulous! it reminds me of the awkward two step people often make when I talk about my tango with cancer and chemo and they have the program"I am sorry to hear that" installed in their minds but it has no place in the conversation.

  3. Mr Twenty Twenty,

You have said that these thought experiments have changed your life. How much time every day do you put into them now?

  4. I like that you are not bashing Catholics or religion, and that you have found the essence of peace and God.
